A first consultation with a logistics operator can set the pace for an entire import operation. When a manufacturing company plans to bring heavy machinery from Asia to Argentina, the initial meeting is not a courtesy: it is the moment where expectations, deadlines, and responsibilities are aligned.
The Windsor Logistics team recommends having the equipment's technical data sheet, the certificate of origin, and the preliminary bill of lading on hand. Without these documents, any quote will be approximate. It is also useful to have the estimated manufacturing or delivery schedule from the Asian supplier.
Weight, dimensions, and type of packaging determine which intermodal routes are viable. A 40-ton machine with lateral over-dimensions cannot pass through just any port. During the consultation, the draft of destination ports, the availability of gantry cranes, and the costs of land transport from Buenos Aires to the plant are reviewed.
Argentina requires specific certifications for industrial machinery: the electrical safety certificate, the import registration with the Secretariat of Industry, and, in some cases, a sworn declaration of exclusive industrial use. Without these papers, the cargo can be held at the Buenos Aires Customs for weeks.
Does the freight include insurance against damage from port handling? What is the estimated time from departure from the port of Shanghai to delivery at the plant? What happens if there is a delay due to congestion at the port of Rosario? These specific questions allow the consultation to move from being a presentation to a work plan.
This article is the first in a series on logistics preparation for industrial importers. The next one addresses selecting the most suitable service format according to the type of cargo.
